COVID-19: Healthy and Fun While at Home With Kids

By Gardner Realtors | March 30, 2020

Times of crisis like these hit everyone hard, and that goes for our children too. Like us, they’re used to being free. They’re accustomed to hanging out with friends, riding their bikes down the street, and seeing their classmates at school each day. We hope these joyous days return sooner than later, but we can make the best of the days inside in the meantime. This can be a very special time for families to slow down and reconnect. And of course, everyone’s safety is of the utmost importance right now, so here are some ways to have fun and stay healthy while you’re at home with your kids.

Keep The Structure

We suggest sitting down with your kids and mapping out how the days at home will flow. Create specific times for reading and homework, chores, free time, meals, family time, and bedtime. But always remember to try to find that balance between creative freedom and rigid structure, because both are necessary!

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

If possible, take your children outside to play. Did you know? Vitamin D is necessary for the proper functioning of your immune system, which is your body’s first line of defense against infection and disease. So, the fresh air will not only be key in keeping everyone’s sanity, the sunshine can literally protect you catching diseases. Of course, it’s vitally important to keep space from others as you run, bike, garden, etc. Remember…at least 6 feet!

Break Out The Boardgames

Remember what it was like before everyone had a screen in their hand and in front of their face? Ah, those were simpler times, weren’t they? A silver lining of this COVID cloud is that we can again return to these simple times, where families are gathered together, enjoying each other’s company. If you’re like our families, that means lots of laughs over board games. So, have some old school fun with Scrabble, Monopoly, Sorry!, etc. Check out this list of the top board games for families this year!

Stay In Touch With Friends

Your kids are just like you. While they love being with their family, they will also miss their friends. Like us adults, it’s important to help your children not feel isolated from their friends or other family members who aren’t in the same house. So, set up a FaceTime or Zoom group so they can virtually hang out! We’ve seen kids come together virtually to read or play video games, and this is a time filled with laughter and joy, even from afar.
