Five New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

By Crystal Gardner-Phillips | December 10, 2018

Each year when the holiday season comes to a close and the last bit of leftover ham is eaten, we start to ponder the upcoming year. Your annual list of New Year’s resolutions may look a lot like mine: don’t skip so many yoga classes, cut down on the sweets, spend more time with family, achieve business goals, etc.

But why stop with health and well-being. How about the thing that’s always there to keep you dry, keep you cool, and a place where so many memories happen throughout the year?

In 2019, let’s make some New Year’s resolutions to not only improve ourselves, but our home, too!

1. Create a Maintenance Schedule

It’s a simple fact of life; a home takes work. Planning ahead will assure that it actually happens, and to help you stay on top of the tasks that need to be done each year, create a schedule that you can check off each season (or month, quarter, etc.).

2. Save Green & Go Green

If you’re like me, saving money has a permanent spot on the New Year’s resolution list. And in 2019, going green doesn’t hurt either. The best part is, you can do both at once, and it really just takes some simple, measures to make it happen. For starters, although you may pay more initially, energy-star appliances can save money in the long run. Another good tip is waiting for the dishwasher and washing machines to be full before running them. Here are some more helpful tips for going green while also saving green:

  • Install a smart, programmable thermostat – like the NEST
  • Switch to low-flow shower heads
  • Clean or change filters regularly
  • Seal any air leaks around windows and doors
  • Install proper insulation in your home
  • Install new and improved energy saving lightbulbs
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room

New Year's Resolutions are for your home too

Don’t forget about your home when making New Year’s resolutions for 2019!

3. Get Organized

You don’t have to wait until the spring to get some good cleaning done. Getting organized will not only make your house look better, it will make life become more seamless. So, go room to room and assess the clutter. Make a priority list of what needs to stay and what you can get rid of (and preferably give to charity such as The New Orleans Mission homeless shelter or Goodwill.). Making a rule to keep your countertops “clutter free” will make you smile. Check out more cleaning tips to freshen up your home.

4. Explore Refinancing

Did you know? We saw a near record low for interest rates on mortgages this past year. They slowly inched up towards the end of the year, but even so, they’re still HALF of the average interest rates over the past 40 years. If you haven’t refinanced your mortgage in a while, 2019 may be the year for it. Talk to our expert team and get the savings ball rolling!

5. Put Safety First

Safety first may be a cheesy slogan, but when it comes to our family and loved ones, it’s the truth. Start the new year by testing your security systems, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors.  Also, with another year where we saw large storms and heavy flooding in Louisiana, it’s important to review your family’s emergency plan.
